* Ballard Acquires European Foothold, Gets More Funding, New Sale in Europe: Ballard Power Systems, Vancouver, has acquired a $6 million controlling interest in Denmark’s Dantherm Power, as a partner with co-investors Danfoss A/S and Dantherm A/S. Dantherm Power designs and builds clean energy backup power systems that utilize Ballard hydrogen fuel cell technology for telecom manufacturers such as Motorola and Ericsson. The joint investment announced Jan. 18 is expected to speed up the sale of fuel cell backup power applications across Europe. Three days later, Ballard reported that, perhaps in response to Canadian industry pleading for more government funding and support (H&FCL Oct. 09), it has been awarded up to $4.8 million by Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) for a project to further advance fuel cell power module technology for transit buses. These design improvements will be implemented on test buses operating in the Vancouver Metro region this fall. Ballard and its partner in charge of system integration, ISE Corp., San Diego, CA will design, assemble and test key sub-components for Ballard’s FCvelocity-HD6 power module and its hybrid electric drive system. It’s expected to speed up commercial introduction of fuel cell hybrid buses by reducing costs, improving durability ... Log in to view full article.
